How do sim cards work, exactly?

Can you just store numbers on them, and use them on another phone that has another phone service and plan? or does the sim card work only with a phone with the same service and plan? I need any helpful information, thanks guys!

How do sim cards work, exactly?
There is a little leprechaun, with a miniature typewriter, who hands off the typed sheets to a fairy who delivers your messages and makes the other person's phone ring. It is a very labor intensive activity.
Reply:A sim card is used to save all the information about your service on it. Your number, your contacts, you pictures, the plan you have. It basically has all of your information on it.
