Is it true that you can buy unlocked phones and use sim cards from other carriers?

Is it true that you can buy unlocked(and/or refurbished) cellphones from telus, virgin mobile etc. and use a sim card from rogers or fido? would that work?

my boyfriend unlocked his own cell to use a sim card from Fido instead.





Also, a lot of my friends go overseas and buy newer and/or unoffered cell phone models (unlocked) from Asia and simply add a sim card from a local carrier once they come back to Canada.

But they have to have sim cards. Like At%26amp;t and T-Mobile.
