Sim cards are very cheap - about 99 Rs. Hutch is very good. Really depends on where you are going in India. If in the rural areas, the reliability of ANY service is in question. However BSNL is supposedly great for that - but (from what I recall) BSNL prepaid is not available.

Please make sure you unlock your cell phone. You'll need to call your service provider to do that before leaving for India. This is to allow other sim cards to function in your phone. The other thing is to make sure your phone is tri-band.

To get a SIM card - u'll need copies of your passport, drivers license, proof of local address (hotel/rent/relatives), passport sized picture. and you're all set!
Reply:it all depends , which place you going to.. i know about north...and theres no problem in metros... dont worry
Reply:Yes you can buy sim card of India. It's very cheap. Sometimes even you get it for free ( the initial money you give is given back to you in form of talk time). You need a passport size photo , an identity proof and a local residential proof.

The reliability of the network depends where you will be using your phone. If you are going to stay in kolkata or any city , Airtel or Hutch is best. I am personally using Airtel and i am very much satisfied with it.

you can browse the websites of the service providers:

1. www.airtelworld.com

2. www.hutch.in

BSNL which is a government service provider is a good option if you want to roam all around in india even to remote places where only BSNL will work but you can not trust the network!
