Are all sim cards the same?

I have a sim card from tracfone, can it work with a sidekick from t-mobile? Has anyone tried this sim card with other phones?

Are all sim cards the same?
all sims are not alike, e.g. t-mobile not compatible w/ cingular

PS FIGGYPOWER- for your information, in my example the physical size of the two cards virtually guaranteed incompatibility, i.e. trying to fit a AA battery into a watch. Evidently a computer science degree does not a cellphone expert make. Do better research. Cheers.
Reply:Oh really? I have a T-Mobile and Cingular card right in front of me. I've had service with BOTH providers and I can tell you that you're complete moron, as I can slide both in an out of any GSM phone. Oh, and I cited my source -- go have a look. Report Abuse

Reply:no it will not work first of all tracfone sucks and so does t-mbile you need to go pre pay virgin mobile is the best and it is cheap
Reply:figgypower beat me to the answer, so, ditto :]
Reply:Yes, all sim cards are alike and the above two answers are completely false. Sim cards follow the GSM standards and if they were not all the same, they would be in violation of GSM standards and would probably have their licenses to manufacture pulled.

But... and it's a huge but... many cell phone networks in the U.S., Canada, and Australia "lock" their phones, so they can only be used with specific sim cards. Thus, a phone you buy from T-Mobile is "locked" to work only with SIM cards that identify themselves as sold by T-Mobile. Sometimes, you can call up the cell phone company and ask for an unlock code and they will just give it to you. Perfectly legitimate reasons to unlock the phone include travelling overseas; your GSM phone will need to use a different SIM card, so most companies (at least Cingular and T-Mobile) will give you the unlock code if you ask nicely.

Now, if you do NOT buy your cell phone from a cell phone operator and it's not branded (see that Cingular/T-Mobile/Whatever mark? well it's branded) then it is unlocked and you can use ANY SIM card you please. This is the true beauty of GSM, being able to swap out SIM cards. If you need documented proof have a look at the source.

To specifically answer your question, your Tracfone SIM card would work on any UNLOCKED Sidekick. However, it sounds like you bought your Sidekick FROM T-Mobile which probably means it was LOCKED to T-Mobile. Try it; at worst it would say your phone is locked to T-Mobile SIM cards; that's it -- niether the phone NOR the SIM card would malfunction. If it is locked, call T-Mobile and ask nicely. They might give you the unlock code and you can look up unlock instructions online.
Reply:No your sim card only works in a phone that is made for the company that made the sims card. Ex.- Cingular uses Cingular etc.....
Reply:i have tried that and it doesnt work because you need a t-mobile SiM card because it has all the info on your t-mobile network.
