GSM phones use a sim card. T-Mobile and ATT are GSM carriers but the phones are usally locked.
If you have service with these carriers you can call customer service to get the unlock code for free.
You would want a GSM quad band phone for traveling. These phones will work when unlocked with any GSM carrier in the world.
