Switching SIM cards from old cell phone to new phone?

Hi. I have an old Samsung cell phone (model SGH-X426) that I got 3-4 years ago from AT%26amp;T (cingular). I am still on the same plan from 3-4 years ago. I am wondering if I switch out the SIM card from the old phone to a new RAZR (or any other relatively new phone) from AT%26amp;T, will I be able to use the new phone? I heard that you have to make sure the RAZR is old enough. Is this true?

In theory you could, but in practice it may or may not work. It would depend on how old the actual SIM card is in your current phone. This is because Cingular used a different type of SIM card 3-4 years ago that were coded differently than the ones they use now.

Primarily this is due to the fact that they switched billing and service platforms shortly after they merged with AT%26amp;T Wireless. Cingular/AT%26amp;T have phased out the old SIM cards over the last several years and have replaced them with newer, more up to date ones. So your old SIM card may work in a new phone, but more than likely it will not.

Moreover, you would lose nothing if you switched over to the new SIM card, so there really isn't any advantage to keeping the old one. So if you want to get a new phone just have a retail store switch your service codes from your old SIM to a new one.

The only thing that might be an issue is uploading all your contact info from the old SIM to the new one. Most phones have a software program that you can load on your computer that will allow you to download and save all your phone contact info. If you do not have that software or do not know how to do this then I would recommend that when you purchase the new device (assuming you will be doing so at a retail store) you ask if they can assist you in doing a contact info swap.
Reply:you can put it in any AT%26amp;T phone it doesnt matter how new or old the phone is. they same sim cards the same so that you can upgrade your phone without buying a new plan or simcard.
